Engineering and Design

The Division of Engineering and Design Office is responsible for the management and coordination of the Bureaus of Structures and Geotechnical Services, Right of Way, Road Design, and Local Projects.

The division’s primary functions include:

  • Coordinate with other KDOT divisions to meet agency objectives and goals
  • Provide in-house design, survey, and right of way acquisition services for projects on the State Highway System
  • Provide management and oversight for projects on the State Highway System designed and surveyed by engineering consultants
  • Coordinate with KDOT field offices for the relocation of utilities associated with projects on the State Highway System
  • Provide for coordination with railroad companies for KDOT highway projects
  • Administer and provide oversight for the Section 130 Railway-Highway Crossings Safety Program
  • Perform geologic, geotechnical and pavement investigations and develop technical reports for projects on the State Highway System
  • Provide in-services safety inspections and load ratings for over 5,000 state owned bridges
  • Administer KTRIPS oversize and overweight vehicle permitting software
  • Provide custom evaluations for “superload” permit routes
  • Provide oversight for the inspection and load rating of over 19,000 locally owned bridges
  • Manage and program projects for bridge preservation programs on the state highway system
  • Administer and distribute federal funds to cities and counties for road and bridge improvement projects
  • Manage and administer the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program
  • Manage the Federal Billboard and Salvage Yard control program
  • Manage KDOT’s right of way inventory and disposal program
  • Coordinate with federal and state agencies to obtain necessary environmental permits for highway projects
  • Management and facilitation of KDOT’s Computer Aided Design and Drafting system as well as other engineering design programs
  • Management of many of KDOT’s engineering databases
  • Provide guidance and management for KTRAN and ad-hoc research related to Engineering and Design activities
  • Prepare and manage the division’s annual budget
